When I first started Hand Over Your Fairy Cakes, one of my goals was to have my work stocked by Hannah Zakari, a pretty Edinburgh based boutique specialising in indie designers. I was really nervous about contacting them: I didn't know much about wholesaling at the time so I did a lot of research before spending about 3 hours agonising over my email, but they were super nice to me and became the first shop ever to make a wholesale order from HOYFC!
Rachael, the face behind Hannah Zakari, works with different artists to create beautiful window displays - if you don't live near Edinburgh, you can see them on the HZ Instagram. The pictured display is by Naoshi, an LA based artist who makes art with shiny coloured sand, who recently hosted a workshop at HZ.
Rachael says people often ask for Hannah, but she's not a real person! The name Hannah Zakari means 'blossoming' or 'blooming' when translated from the Japanese 花盛 り [hanazakari], as Rachael wanted the business name to reflect her love of Japan.
The inside of the shop is bright and airy and the beautiful displays change frequently, with new stock and new designers arriving all the time. I can't go in without something catching my eye.
Hannah Zakari publish a zine with collected articles, tutorials, interviews and illustrations contributed by their designers and friends. You can see a few pictures on the HZ blog or even pick one up from the shop in Edinburgh. The HZ blog is an inspiring collection of shop news, product spotlights, styling and designer interviews (including one with HOYFC!)
The Hannah Zakari website is just as lovely as the Edinburgh shop. It's easy to navigate and you can even view items grouped by individual designers: you can see the HOYFC collection here. I've made a wishlist of HZ products I love - click on the images above to see more details.
Have you been to Hannah Zakari? It's certainly worth a visit if you're in Edinburgh, but if not, there's always the online shop!
